Google is attempting to rein in the out-of-control app storage situation with “Scoped Storage.” Scoped Storage was introduced in Android 10 but has since been changed several times since its debut because of how dramatically it affects storage access for many Android applications. Google is enforcing Scoped Storage for apps that target API level 30, which is the latest API level coinciding with Android 11.

Rather than try to explain Scoped Storage all over again, here’s a graphic from Google’s “All things privacy in Android 11” talk that summarizes how Scoped Storage will affect storage access for apps in Android 11.

One of the more interesting changes to storage access that has flown under the radar thus far is the introduction of a new “trashing” mechanism. This feature is detailed in Google’s “Storage access with Android 11” video. In essence, apps using the MediaStore API can trash a file instead of deleting it in order to give the user a chance to recover the file later. Google likens this feature to the Recycle Bin on PCs except Android’s recycle bin is hidden by default. Google states that apps with edit access to trashed files or that request user consent can display items from the recycle bin, though. Items that are trashed are automatically deleted by Android after 30 days.

Android 11 is also requiring that apps get consent from a user before modifying media files that the app doesn’t own. Another new feature that has been added is “favorites,” which allows media apps to add a “favorite” file status to designated media items so that other media apps will know that the user views these items as important. For instance, if the user stars an item in a gallery app, then other media apps can see that this item has been favorited.

Although Google’s talk doesn’t show an example of the MediaStore’s new trash concept, the API has been available since the first Android 11 Developer Preview. Developer Yuriy Mysochenko published an article on Medium back in February that goes over this new API, and he demonstrated the API in a sample app as shown below:

In this demo, the app asked the user if they wanted to move a photo to trash which would temporarily delete the photo from the gallery. After 7 days, the photo would be permanently deleted from storage. Googler Roxanna Aliabadi mentions that the OS stores trashed items for 30 days, so the 7-day storage limit was likely increased since the first Developer Preview.

Developers interested in implementing this API can check out the documentation right now on the Android Developers website. Media apps can create a PendingIntent called createTrashRequest to prompt the user to trash an item, which then adds the flag IS_TRASHED indicating that a media item has been trashed. Trashed items are retained by the OS until DATE_EXPIRES, after which they are permanently deleted from storage. Media apps querying the MediaStore must explicitly query for trashed items using QUERY_ARG_MATCH_TRASHED as trashed items are filtered away from operations by default.

Even though WhatsApp has received several new features over the last couple of months, the instant messenger still isn’t as feature-rich as some of the other popular messengers out there. It lacks quite a few useful features, like the ability to use the messenger on multiple devices at the same time. Granted that you can use WhatsApp on your smartphone and desktop simultaneously, but you’re limited to just those two devices with no option to add a third or a fourth device. Earlier this year in March, we learned that WhatsApp was preparing to add multi-device support to the app. The messenger has now started testing the feature, and it might soon be released on the beta channel.

According to a recent tweet from WABetaInfo, the feature will allow users to connect their WhatsApp account to up to 4 devices at the same time. The feature is currently under development and we don’t have any information regarding its release timeline. Along with the multi-device support, WhatsApp is also testing a few other useful additions, like a search by date feature, new tools for Storage Usage, a Clear except starred option, ShareChat support, and a Search image on the web feature.

For the Search by date feature, WhatsApp will add a new Calendar icon to the in-chat search mode. Tapping on the icon will bring up a calendar where you’ll be able to choose the exact date to filter your messages. The feature is currently in the alpha stage of development and might undergo further changes before it’s released on the beta channel. It’s worth noting that the feature may be rolled out for iOS users before it’s available on WhatsApp for Android.

The new Storage Usage tools, however, will make their way to the Android version of the app and will let you manage WhatsApp’s storage use more efficiently. The messenger will completely redesign the current Storage Usage section on the app and add a few new filters to find large files and forwarded files easily. Additionally, WhatsApp will also add a new Sort button to help you sort photos shared in a chat. The Sort button will include three options to sort images by — Newest, Oldest, and Size.

The aforementioned Clear except starred option for Storage Usage is being tested in the iOS version of the app and it will do exactly what its name suggests. In the current version of WhatsApp, you already get an option within chats to clear all messages except the ones that you’ve starred. However, if you clear messages or files from the Storage Usage section, the app deletes starred messages as well. With the new feature, you’ll be able to clear messages and files from the Storage Usage section without worrying about losing your starred messages.

For Indian users, WhatsApp is testing ShareChat integration which will add a dedicated media player for videos hosted on ShareChat. For the unaware, ShareChat is a popular Indian social network that boasts of over 60 million monthly active users. The platform hosts short videos in vernacular languages that are often shared on WhatsApp. With ShareChat integration, WhatsApp users will be able to view videos hosted on the platform without being redirected to a browser window. Much like YouTube videos, ShareChat videos will be played in Picture-in-Picture mode on the messenger.

Earlier this year in March, WhatsApp added a new search message on the web option in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 2.20.40.26. Now, the company has started testing a search image on the web feature for iOS users. Much like the previously released feature, the new search image on the web option will replace the forward button on a frequently forwarded image with a Search button. Tapping on the button will upload the image to Google and conduct a reverse image search, allowing users to get more information about the forwarded image. The feature is also in development on the Android version of the app.

All of the aforementioned features are not available to the public on the beta version of WhatsApp. However, we expect the company to roll them out in a future beta release. It’s also worth noting that since the features are currently in development, WhatsApp may make some significant changes before they’re released on the beta channel.

Google has released the first Android 11 Beta, enabling not just developers but also curious users to try their hands at the upcoming version of Android. Clearly, the first Android 11 Beta is far from the final release candidate build, but it is much more stable as a daily driver than the previous Developer Preview builds. Although the beta build is currently limited to Google’s own lineup of Pixel devices, many other manufacturers are likely to follow in the footsteps and release Android 11 betas for their devices – just like OPPO announced the Android 11 Beta for the Find X2 and the Find X2 Pro flagship smartphones. Now, Xiaomi has confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro and the POCO F2 Pro will also be getting Android 11 Beta builds.

Curiously, the announcement for the Mi 10 series comes from the official Twitter handle of MIUI – Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – instead of Xiaomi’s own handle. This makes it more than evident that the upcoming beta release for the Mi 10 series will run with MIUI on top. Similarly, OPPO had also confirmed that the Android 11 Beta for the Find X2 series will come with the company’s custom Android skin i.e. Color OS on top.

Alongside MIUI, Xiaomi’s spin-off brand POCO has also announced the Android 11 Beta for its recently announced flagship – the POCO F2 Pro, which is a rebranded Redmi K30 Pro.

Neither Xiaomi, nor POCO, nor OPPO have clearly mentioned the versions of their respective custom overlays that will be part of the Android 11 beta program. Thus, we cannot confirm whether the beta from Xiaomi involves the older MIUI 11 or the very recently introduced MIUI 12, which is currently in the beta testing phase itself.

The support for custom Android skins, however, is a new and interesting initiative since previous Android beta builds (for Android P and Q) were simply AOSP-based versions i.e. came with stock Android interfaces, overriding the software experience manufacturers usually offer.

Thus far, Xiaomi has only confirmed the beta for the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and POCO F2 Pro.

Back in August last year, three Chinese OEMs — Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo — formed an alliance for the development of a new P2P file transfer protocol to simplify cross-device file transfers. The solution aimed to offer an AirDrop like experience in the Android ecosystem by allowing devices from different manufacturers to seamlessly share files between them. After months of development, it was finally rolled out earlier this year in February and now, a few more manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon.

According to recent posts on Chinese social media platform Weibo, OnePlus, Realme, Meizu, and Black Shark have now joined the P2P file transfer alliance. Thanks to this, cross-device file transfer support will soon be coming to devices from these manufacturers, allowing users to easily share files without the need for any third-party applications. The move is expected to benefit over 400 million users around the world.

For the unaware, the file transfer protocol supports a variety of file formats and it even lets users share entire folders with each other. The protocol supports file transfer speeds in the order of 20MBps over a stable connection, which is significantly better than file transfers over Bluetooth.

As of now, OnePlus, Realme, and Meizu haven’t revealed exactly when the feature will be released on their respective Android skins. However, as a recent report from BusinessWire points out, Black Shark’s new JoyUI 11 already includes support for the P2P file transfer protocol. The company recently rolled out JoyUI 11 for the Black Shark 2 and Black Shark 2 Pro, which means that these devices should already feature support for the file transfer protocol, along with the company’s latest Black Shark 3 series.

Xiaomi’s much-awaited Mi 10 smartphone was launched today in India. While the handset’s pricing starts from Rs 49,999, it comes with the same processor as the Realme X50 Pro, which starts at Rs 39,999 in India. This might make you wonder if Realme X50 Pro is a great deal or Mi 10 comes with some incredible upgrades over the Realme handset that makes the price difference worth it. Design and display

Both Realme X50 Pro and Mi 10 come with punch-hole displays and glass-sandwich design, but that’s where the similarities end. Performance and software

Realme X50 Pro and Mi 10 are both driven by flagship-grade Snapdragon 865 SoC, coupled with Adreno 640 GPU. While the Realme X50 Pro is available with up to 12GB of RAM, the Mi 10 is only available with up to 8GB of RAM in India. There will be no noticeable difference in the performance of the two smartphones, but you might have a preference for Realme offering if you want to go for extra memory. Talking about software, the Mi 10 and Realme X50 Pro boot MIUI 11 and RealmeUI, respectively, atop Android 10.

On the storage front, the two handsets have up to 256GB storage onboard, which can be further expandable using a microSD card.

Cameras

Battery, security, and connectivity options

Realme X50 Pro houses a 4,200mAh battery with an astounding 65W SuperDart fast charging technology that can fully charge the smartphone in just 35 minutes. However, it doesn’t offer features such as wireless charging or reverse wireless charging. The Mi 10 is driven by a bigger 4,780mAh battery with slower 30W wired fast-charging. On the other hand, with the Mi 10, you get 30W wireless fast-charging as well as 10W reverse wireless charging support.

The Realme X50 Pro has been priced in India at Rs 39,999 for the base model with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The 8GB + 128GB variant costs Rs 41,999, while the high-end 12GB + 256GB model is priced at Rs 47,999. The handset comes in Moss Green and Rust Red colour options and can be fetched from Realme official website and Flipkart.

The Mi 10 variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage has been priced at Rs 49,999, making it Rs 8,000 more expensive than the comparable Realme X50 Pro model. The Xiaomi Mi 10 variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage has a price tag of Rs 54,999. There’s no 12GB variant on offer in the Indian market for this handset.

In all, the Realme X50 Pro is the smartphone you should get if you want a smartphone that does just about everything you require. However, if you want the latest camera specs, a bigger battery, and wireless charging, then Mi 10 is the smartphone you should go for, though you will end up spending roughly 25 percent more.

A Google Play Console listing then showed the smartphone will be powered by the 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio G70 chipset and Android 10, which was later reiterated by a Geekbench listing.

Assuming the listing is indeed accurate and no 5G support is mentioned in it, the smartphone could be the 4G-only model. The listing also mentions the Redmi 10X 4G price will be RMB 1,499 (about Rs 16,000), but this could just be a placeholder price tag and not the actual cost of the smartphone. There is no word yet regarding what the 5G variant of the Redmi 10X will bring to the table apart from more RAM for the base variant and faster mobile data connectivity.

Redmi 10X Pro 5G specifications and colour options

As mentioned earlier, this is the first time we are learning of the Redmi 10X Pro. This will also be a 5G smartphone, but most other specifications of the handset are unknown at the moment. Nonetheless, we can confirm that this model will launch in 8 GB + 128 GB and 8 GB + 256 GB configurations and will be sold in Dark Blue, Violet, Gold, and Silver/ White colors.
